Government begins the payment of COLA (Cost Of Living Allowance) to teachers this month, August.

“In the light of the foregoing, the Parties have resolved to reconvene on Tuesday 12th July 2022 at 2 pm, to begin negotiations on the demand by Organized Labour,” from the emergency meeting.

Speaking to Joy News, Benjamin Authur, the Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission disclosed that the “modalities” for facilitating the payment of COLA have been completed successfully.

They will also communicate to the Organized Labour about the development as well.

He further added that they are certain about the government implementing it. In the due time, the government will announce to the public the exact date for the payments.

SYNOPSIS

In the previous month, July this year, Hon. Ignatius Baffour-Awuah Minister, Employment and Labour Relations (Chairman for the meeting) held an emergency meeting to address the demand of the Teacher associations.

Before the meeting, the major Teacher Unions NAGRAT, GNAT, and TEWU declared an indefinite strike action.

Not to escalate the situation and danger the life of students in the sector affected (pre-tertiary schools), the Government met the Organized Labour to address the issue/demand raised by the associations.

On Friday 8th, July 2022, the government represented by the Ministers of Employment and Labour Relations, Finance, Education and National Security sat down with the Organized Labour to address their grievances at an Emergency Meeting.

At the emergency meeting, both parties agreed and wish to state some outcomes of the meeting.

Below are what both parties wish to state:

  1. Government has taken note of the demand by the Organized Labour for 20% Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA) in the light of the current economic conditions prevailing in the country.
  2. Government is committed to engaging Organized Labour to find a lasting solution to the same.
  3. Government has appealed to the Teacher Union to call off their ongoing industrial action.
