Flashback:Teacher Trainees Allowance not Cancelled-Mahama

The former President of Ghana, John Mahama has disclosed that Teacher Trainees Allowance was not canceled by the NDC Government but was rather substituted with the student’s Loan.
According to the Former President, the government has upgraded the Colleges of Education to degree-awarding tertiary institutions therefore, they need to take Student Loan.

He further explained that, for reasons of equity, teacher trainees allowance was substituted with students loan because all students pursuing education courses in colleges of education and universities in Ghana will take the same certificate.

“With the substitution of the teacher trainees allowances, with the student’s loan, we increased the capacity of the colleges of education to admit more students, Since we did that substitution, enrolment in teacher training colleges has gone up by 63.8%.
” It means that 63.8% of the students admitted in colleges of education at the time the policy was introduced would not have been there if we continue to maintain the allowance”.
