Strike: Government’s failure to grant compensation will call for vacation- CETAG hints

The leadership of CETAG has inked their unfair treatment by the government due to its delay to grant compensation packages to tutors for the all-year-round academic work.

An official release from CETAG has it that, all members of the CETAG across the 46 public Colleges of Education will strongly advise themselves when the expected compensation due them is not given.

“i. Undue delay of the Government in giving CETAG members full conditions of service despite engaging the leadership of the Association in negotiations since August 2021. This attitude of the Government also contravenes article 24 clause of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana which category states:

“Every person has the right to work under satisfactory, safe, and healthy conditions, and shall receive equal pay for equal work without distinction , of any kind.

“ii. Failure of the government to act on CETAG’S demand for a compensatory package for academic staff in the government of education who have been compelled to work all year round without taking a compulsory vacation or off-season break contrary to provisions of the Harmonised Conditions of Service for the Colleges of Education, Section 10.1.6 page 74-75.

“This all-year-round academic work for tutors also sharply contravenes the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, article 24 clause 2 and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) section 10 which explicitly states: Every worker shall be assured of rest, leisure and reasonable limitation of working hours and periods of holidays with pay, as well as remuneration for public holidays.”

“In conclusion, CETAG wishes to:

a. Remind the Government of her obligation to tutors of the colleges of education. b. Draw the public’s attention to the unfairness being meted out to CETAG members.

c. Serve clear notice that if by 31″ August 2022, Government has not given us our full conditions of service which include our demand for unconditional extension of the parallel rate of generic and research allowances paid to analogous tertiary institutions to the academic staff of the colleges of education.

d. Grant compensation package to tutors for the all-year-round academic work. all members of CETAG across the 46 public colleges of education shall strongly advise ourselves.”
